History
The Regional Centre Shillong has a long history; its inception was in April 1988 when it was the IGNOU North Eastern Regional Centre looking after the states of: Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura. In March, 1998 the Guwahati Regional Center was established which had the jurisdiction of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Since 1998 to the end of 2000 and beginning of 2001 the IGNOU Regional Centre Shillong looked after the states of Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura.
Since that time onwards the Regional Centre has the responsibility of catering to learners in Meghalaya only, and has covered all the Districts of the State in terms of establishing Learner Support Centres, excepting that of South West Garo Hills.
Thus the IGNOU Regional Centre Shillong is one of the oldest Regional Centre in the Country and has been a trend setter in establishing Learner Support Centres all over North East India.
